The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the beginning of Christmas shopping-season in America. Thanksgiving is a bankholiday for almost everyone and the Friday often is too. They wanted to take an early start for the Christmas rush and started buying (online) in this weekend after Thanksgiving. Nowadays it is not just about toys and gifts but a lot of different goods are on offer, sometimes at steep discounts. Since a couple of years, the trend has spread to Europe so that we too can enjoy discounts of all kinds of products.
